A piano and keyboard are not ordinary pieces of furniture. They are sensitive, heavy, and precisely crafted instruments that require proper handling, professional equipment, and an experienced team. Whether it's moving a piano to an apartment, delivering a purchased instrument, or renting a piano for a concert, wedding, or event, a professional approach is crucial.

At Japan Piano Center, in addition to selling and servicing pianos and keyboards, we also offer professional transport, delivery, instrument rental, and tuning. Below, we answer the most common questions customers have before moving or renting a piano or keyboard.

How does the moving of a piano or keyboard work?

The moving process starts with assessing the location. It is important to know from which room the instrument is being taken, where it is being delivered, and whether there are stairs, an elevator, narrow hallways, thresholds, ramps, or other challenges along the way. Based on this information, the appropriate equipment and method of transport are determined.

Before moving, the piano or keyboard is properly protected. Sensitive parts are covered, the casing, keys, pedals, and surfaces that could be damaged during the move are secured. The instrument is then carefully moved using special transport aids, straps, trolleys, etc.

During the move, it is very important that the instrument is under constant supervision, as it is heavy and sensitive to impacts, vibrations, and improper tilting. Therefore, the transport is carried out slowly, thoughtfully, and with a team that understands the specifics of pianos and keyboards.

After delivery, the piano is placed in the agreed location, the basic condition of the instrument and the conditions in the room are checked. After a certain period, tuning is also recommended, as the instrument adjusts to the new environment after transport.

Why is it not advisable to leave piano moving to regular transport companies?

A piano or keyboard is significantly more challenging to transport than regular furniture. It can weigh several hundred kilograms, has sensitive internal mechanics, strings under high tension, a lacquered casing, and precisely balanced parts. Incorrect movement can cause damage to the casing, mechanics, keys, pedals, or even the structure of the instrument.

A regular moving service usually lacks specialized equipment and experience for handling pianos. Improper lifting or tilting can lead to damage to the instrument, the space, or the individuals involved in the move.

Professional piano transport means that the team understands how the instrument is built, where it can be safely held, how to protect it, how to move it up and down stairs, and how to secure it safely in the vehicle. With a piano, it’s not just important to get it from one point to another, but to ensure it arrives without damage and in good condition.

How much does a piano or piano weigh?

The weight of the instrument depends on the type, size, and model. Smaller pianos typically weigh around 180 to 220 kilograms. Larger and higher-quality pianos can weigh 250 kilograms or more.

Pianos, especially salon and concert models, are even heavier. Smaller pianos can weigh around 280 to 350 kilograms, while larger concert pianos often exceed 450 kilograms. The largest concert instruments can weigh over 500 kilograms.

Due to the weight, it is important to plan the transport in advance. When delivering to higher floors, up stairs, or through narrow passages, it is necessary to check the movement options, the load-bearing capacity of the path, and the need for additional equipment.

How to prepare the space before delivering a piano?

Before delivery, it is good to prepare the space where the piano will stand. First, determine a suitable location. The instrument should not be placed directly next to a radiator, window, exterior wall, fireplace, air conditioning unit, or in a spot where it will be exposed to direct sunlight.

The path to the space should be clear. Remove rugs, smaller furniture, decorations, potted plants, stands, cabinets, or other items that could obstruct the move. If there are doors, hallways, or stairs along the way, it is good to check the width and height of the passages.

It is also advisable to protect sensitive floor surfaces in advance if necessary. The professional team will use protective equipment, but good preparation of the space is always welcome.

Before delivery, ask yourself a few questions: is the path to the space wide enough, is the elevator large enough, are there stairs along the way, is the space stable enough, and is the chosen location suitable for the long-term placement of the instrument?

Delivering a piano to an apartment – what do you need to know?

Delivering a piano to an apartment requires more preparation than delivering a regular product. It is important to provide the team with as much information about the location in advance: floor, vehicle access, width of hallways, presence of an elevator, number of stairs, and any peculiarities of the building.

If the apartment is in a block, it is good to check if access with a transport vehicle to the entrance is possible. It is also useful to check if the elevator is large enough and if the piano can be safely carried up the stairs.

During delivery to an apartment, the instrument is usually first protected, and then moved to the space with appropriate equipment. Once the piano is set up, it is important not to move it unnecessarily. Even minor movements within the space can damage the floor or the instrument if not done correctly.

Good communication before delivery allows for a quicker, safer, and more predictable execution.

Renting a piano for a concert or event – how does it work?

Renting a piano for a concert, wedding, event, recording, or other occasion starts with basic information about the event. It is important to know where the event will take place, what type of event it is, how long the instrument will be needed, what space is available, and what musical requirements the performers have.

Based on this, a suitable instrument is selected. For smaller events, a quality piano may be suitable, while for concerts, classical performances, or prestigious events, a piano is often a better choice.

Professional rental usually includes an agreement on the date, preparation of the instrument, delivery to the location, setup, tuning, and pickup after the event. For significant events, it makes sense for the instrument to be on-site early enough to stabilize and be professionally tuned after setup.

The purpose of professional rental is not just to deliver the instrument, but to ensure that it functions and sounds as it should at the event.

Conclusion

Transporting and renting a piano requires knowledge, experience, and the right equipment. A piano or keyboard is not an item that can simply be loaded into a vehicle and moved to another location. It is a valuable musical instrument that needs professional handling from the first move to the final setup.

Whether you need to relocate a piano, deliver a purchased instrument, or rent a piano for a concert, wedding, or event, professional execution is the best protection for the instrument and your event.

At Japan Piano Center, we offer professional transport, delivery, piano and keyboard rentals, and on-site tuning. We ensure that the instrument is safely delivered, properly set up, and ready to play.
